Loose Leaf Tea vs Tea Bags

Most of us grew up with tea bags, so why do so many tea lovers switch to loose leaf? It comes down to flavour, freshness and choice.

More room to unfurl

Loose leaves expand as they brew, releasing their full flavour and aroma. Most tea bags are small and tightly packed, so the leaves can’t open up in the same way.

Whole leaves, not dust

Many tea bags contain “fannings”, the small broken pieces left over from tea processing. Loose leaf tea uses whole or large pieces of leaf, fruit and spice, which keep their flavour for longer and give a smoother, more rounded cup.

You can see what you’re drinking

With loose leaf tea you can see every ingredient: real apple pieces, cinnamon sticks, rose petals and green tea buds.

Less waste

Brewing loose leaf tea with a reusable infuser or teapot means no bags to throw away, and the used leaves can go straight on the compost.

Is loose leaf tea harder to make?

Not at all. A teapot with an infuser or a simple strainer is all you need. Our step-by-step brewing guide shows you how.
